Pill bugs, or as we more commonly call them,
roly-polies. Pill bugs need moisture to survive. They are found in high moisture areas like mulch beds and over-watered soil. They contribute to the ecosystem as decomposers. Pill bugs will eat decomposed plant matter and will also eat living plants, especially in wet conditions. They are not harmful, but have been known to invade homes and consume wooden house supports. In ideal conditions, pill bugs can become a big nuisance. Although they may not search out interior shelter, they can be found in bathrooms, kitchens, and near exterior doors. The eggs are carried in a brood pouch on the underside surface of the female. Eggs hatch after three to four weeks. After hatching, the young may stay in the pouch for an additional one to two weeks, while gaining nutrients received through marsupial fluid.
