Ants come in a variety of species. More than 13,800 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified. Ants form colonies with a few specific roles. In these colonies, you will find Workers, Soldiers, Drones (Swarmers), and Queens. Colonies are described as superorganisms because they appear to operate as a unified entity. Because they work together, they are able to survive in many different environments. Ants can be found on every major land mass except for Antartica. Ants will use several different pheromones to communicate with each other depending on the situation. When attacking and defending, ants will bite or (in many species) sting. Bullet ants take the gold medal in the most painful sting of any insect! Ants are great at surviving because they can find a food source just about anywhere. Some ants are known to farm aphids by tapping on them with their antennae, causing the aphids to secrete a sweet liquid called honeydew. The adaptive nature of ant colonies make it nearly impossible to eliminate entire colonies. Control techniques may vary according to species, location, and circumstance.
